After 2:30-4:00 pm the sun will be setting behind you. Seats in the Paddock and Stands J-E are on the west side of the track. The seats in the Penthouse sections all have backs. The Indy 500 race goes on for a long time, so I would reccommend a seat with a back to it. Some people like to get as close to the center in front of the pits but at the end of the day it's a question of preferences.
